Gathering and Harvesting

Traditional Maori people gathered most of their food from the forest, streams, seas and gardens. They were hunters, fishers and farmers.

The Maori diet mainly consisted of birds, fish, supplemented by herbs and roots. They grew crops like potato and kumara.

Maori cooked food in the ground, known as a hangi. Some Maori used hot water and steam to boil their kai. They place the food on hot stones and then cover the kai with a cloth. This happens in many celebrations over New Zealand to this day.
